This tuna sandwich is a lunchbox classic. But, this recipe has a slight twist to it. Tuna, mayo, and celery are combined with Worcestershire sauce, some chili sauce (yes, chili sauce!), fresh lemon juice, and topped with thinly sliced cucumber and lettuce, then placed on toasted, or untoasted, bread. Once you've tried this recipe, you'll agree that this is one really good tuna sandwich.

Grab a high-quality tuna to make this tuna salad. Either chunk or flaked tuna, whichever you prefer. Tuna that has been canned in olive oil, instead of water, does add a bit more flavor to the tuna, but either one works fine for this sandwich. You should drain the can of tuna, and then flake it before mixing with the other ingredients.

This recipe can easily be scaled up to make more sandwiches, and while this makes 2 regular-sized sandwiches, you might just want a thicker sandwich for yourself and decide to use it all on one. There are many variations and additions you can do to tweak this tuna salad sandwich, and we have provided a few ideas below for you to enjoy.

Serve it for lunch or a light dinner with a cup of soup and chips or a tossed salad.

Ingredients

  • 1 (7-ounce) can tuna, drained and flaked

  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise, or to taste

  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped celery

  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 teaspoons chili sauce

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

  • 1 small cucumber

  • 4 leaves lettuce

  • 4 slices bread, or toast

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Mix the tuna with mayonnaise, celery, Worcestershire sauce, chili sauce, and lemon juice, adding a little more mayonnaise if not moist enough.

  3. Peel and thinly slice cucumber.

  4. Place a lettuce leaf on a slice of bread or toast.

  5. Spread tuna mixture on the lettuce leaf and then top with thinly sliced cucumber.

  6. Top with another slice of bread or toast.

Tips

  • Select your favorite bread, whether it be sourdough, whole wheat, or rye. Then, you have the choice of toasting it or not toasting it. We're partial to toasting it if we can.

Recipe Variation

  • Omit the bread altogether and use a large lettuce leaf instead. Romaine lettuce leaves work the best.
  • Or, put the tuna salad on top of a bed of lettuce or fresh spinach leaves.
  • Add some other veggies: sliced tomatoes, or pickles are always good on a tuna sandwich.
  • Add in 1/4 cup of finely chopped onion and combine with the other ingredients. Red or sweet onions work well.
  • Herbs can add an additional taste: try adding a little dash of fresh dill or parsley or whatever herb you fancy.
  • Chop up one hard-boiled egg and mix it in thoroughly.
