INGREDIENTS:

• 1/2 cup shortening
• 1 cup brown sugar, packed
• 1 egg
• 2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk
• 1 cup walnuts, chopped

• 2 tablespoons shortening
• 1 tablespoon soft butter
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3 cup sifted confectioners' sugar, divided
• 5 tablespoons half-and-half, heated until hot
