We all have favorite recipes, our own personal comfort foods nobody can make like our mothers. My husband and I are always talking about our mothers' great meals -- delicious desserts, casseroles and the best fried chicken in the world. Some of the dishes our mothers made came from old recipes, but most were from memory. They seemed to know just how to make a meal, and it always turned out perfect.
My mother recently sent me this old green mixing bowl. Bought when she and my father were married in 1947, the green pottery bowl's only marking is a small chip, but the years of memories make it priceless to me. I was amazed at how much smaller it looked when I first took it out of the package, because it seemed huge so many years ago. Countless brownies and cakes were mixed by hand in that bowl, and it often became a serving dish at the dinner table. I treasure the memories of time spent in the kitchen with my mother, watching, helping and learning.
Here are some of the recipes we talk about and still enjoy, and nobody can make them like Mom!
