This is an old-fashioned apple fritter recipe. Apple wedges are coated with a sweet batter and then deep-fried to perfection. Drizzle the fritters with syrup or caramel sauce or dust them with powdered sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/4 cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 large egg, beaten

  • 1/3 cup milk

  • 1 tablespoon melted shortening, or butter

  • 2 large apples

  • Oil, for frying

  • Confectioners' sugar, for optional topping

  • Caramel sauce, or syrup, for optional topping

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients. Heat oil to 370 F.

  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

  3. In another bowl, whisk the egg with the milk; add to flour mixture and beat until smooth.

  4. Add the melted shortening or butter and mix well.

  5. Peel and core the apples; cut into 8 wedges.

  6. Dip apple wedges into the batter, let excess drip off, and carefully lower into the hot oil.

  7. Fry for about 4 minutes, or until golden brown.

  8. Serve with syrup or caramel sauce.
