This tasty apple saute is great as a side dish to pork or ham, or add a sauce, heavy cream, or ice cream and serve as a dessert.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 large apples, Granny Smith or other good cooking apples
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 6 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • dash nutmeg

PREPARATION:

Peel the apples; core and slice into thin slices. Toss with lemon juice as you add slices to a bowl to keep them from turning brown.

In a large saucepan or skillet, melt the butter; add apple slices and sauté over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 6 to 10 minutes or until tender and just beginning to change color.

Combine cornstarch and water; stir into the apples. Gently stir in the brown sugar and spices. Bring to a simmer; reduce heat and simmer for about 3 to 5 minutes, stirring a few times. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
