Use this spicy sauce for ribs, chops, or chicken. Use a little more of the ground chipotle chile if you like a spicier sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 1/4 cups ketchup
  • 2/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle chile powder

Preparation:

Heat oil over medium heat in a skillet or medium saucepan; add onion and cook, stirring, for about 2 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute longer. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer. Lower heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 4 to 5 minutes.
Makes about 2 cups.
