Cornmeal Biscuits

These biscuits are made with milk and shortening, along with cornmeal and flour.

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 15 minutes


  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sift before measuring
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk


Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. in a mixing bowl Stir in cornmeal. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add milk; stir just until dry ingredients are moistened.

Knead just a few times on a floured surface, or until you have a cohesive dough. Roll out about 3/4-inch thick then cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter. Place on baking sheet. Bake at 425° for 12 to 15 minutes.
Makes about 1 dozen.

Delicious Biscuits!, Member theauthenticnut

These were very flaky and easy to make, I did however make a few changes. #1 I did not sift the flour before measuring. #2 I did not knead the dough, I find the less biscuit dough is handled, the flakier they are. #3 My biscuits were done baking in 12 minutes, so the baking time should be changed to 12-15 minutes. Overall good recipe and I would make these again! : )
