Old-Fashioned Porridge

This old fashioned porridge is made with steel cut oats. Add your favorite sweetener and some fresh berries or fruit to this simple porridge, and enjoy!


  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup Scotch oats (steel-cut)
  • milk
  • sugar, honey, or syrup, as desired
  • berries, fruit slices, or raisins, optional


Bring water and salt to a boil. Sprinkle with oats, stirring constantly. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve porridge hot with milk and honey, sugar, or syrup. Top with berries or fresh sliced fruit, if desired. 

Serves 4 to 6.

Great basic recipe for porridge, Member gourmetwannabe

I like to use less water -- two cups instead of two and a half cups -- and reduce the cooking time to 20 minutes. This gives it a litlle more tecture, which is more to my liking. But, that's just me...
