Spiced Molasses Bars with Orange Icing


A recipe for molasses bars made with butter, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, coffee, and a simple orange icing.


  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 cup hot coffee
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda


Cream together the butter and sugar; add egg, beating well. Add molasses, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves; stir to blend thoroughly. Add part of the coffee; stir. Combine flour and baking soda; stir half into the creamed mixture, blending well. Add the remaining coffee, followed by remaining flour, stirring after each addition. Spread batter into a greased and floured 9-inch square baking pan. Bake at 350° for about 25 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.


  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter, soft
  • 5 teaspoons orange juice
Mix icing ingredients all together in a small bowl, adding a little more juice if needed. Spread over cooled molasses bars. Makes about 36 molasses bars.
