Layered Toffee Squares with Chocolate

These bars are made with a buttery crust and pecan and chocolate topping.

Total Time: 20 minutes


  • 1 stick (4 ounces) butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • Topping
  • 1 stick (4 ounces) butter
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk, (14-ounce)
  • 1/4 cup pecans
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 ounces German sweet chocolate, melted in 1 Tb water


Preheat the oven to 350° F. Butter an 8-inch square baking pan.

Cream 4 ounces of softened butter with 1/4 cup sugar. Blend in flour. Spread into a buttered 8-inch square pan; bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes, until firm and lightly browned around the edges.

Combine 4 ounces butter, 2 tablespoons sugar, condensed milk, and pecans in a small saucepan; cook, stirring, until mixture leaves the sides of the pan. Stir in vanilla.

Pour the condensed milk mixture over shortbread;cool.

Spread melted chocolate over the top; cool. Cut in squares.

These bars were yummy and fairly easy but the recipe could contain a little more information. It says 20 minutes total but the cooking time of the shortbread is 20 minutes and the cooking time of the condensed milk mixtures is likely more than 20 minutes.While the baking and the cooking of the condensed milk mixture can be done simultaneously. It seems that the mixture should be cooled before even starting the chocolate. For a novice I didn't understand how to determine when done. I did get it when it happened but some more information would have been helpful. Also, I had no experience with melting chocolate to be used in this manner. I could have used some guidance there too. I am going to make again. If anyone has tips I would love to hear them.
