In trying to figure out how to post my own request, I do have an answer for your "red velvet cake" request. It's from my grandmother who is an excellent cook so it has to be good. INGREDIENTS:
PREPARATION:Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Sift flour, salt & cocoa together. Add alternately with buttermilk. Beat after each addition. Stir in baking soda and vinegar mixture. Bake 30 minuts at 350° in 2 9-inch greased and floured pans. Here is her recipe for the frosting:
