Chocolate Cake

By Diana Rattray, About.com

This is an old-fashioned chocolate layer cake made with cocoa.

Prep Time: 8 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation:

Grease and flour two 8-inch round layer cake pans or a 13x9x2-inch pan. Heat oven to 350°.

In a large mixing bowl with electric mixer, cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Add eggs to creamed mixture, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix together cocoa and hot water. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add flour mixture alternately with cocoa and water mixture to creamed ingredients, beating well. Stir in vanilla. Bake chocolate cake at 350° for about 35 to 45 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.
(Bake in greased and floured pans; two round layers or a 13x9x2-inch pan.)
