Ice Water Chocolate Cake and Chocolate Frosting


A chocolate cake recipe with chocolate frosting.

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 3 cups cake flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1 1/2 cups ice water


Cream butter, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, beating well after each addition. Add melted chocolate; blend well. Sift together dry ingredients and add alternately with the ice water. Pour into three 9-inch layer cake pans. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool 5 to 10 minutes and remove from pans. Cool thoroughly before frosting.

Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 8 cups sifted confectioners sugar (about 2 pounds - sift before measuring)
  • 1/4 cup half and half cream
  • 2 egg whites (use Just Whites or other egg white substitute)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 4 ounces melted chocolate
Blend all ingredients. Beat on high speed until light and fluffy.
