This red cake recipe with frosting comes from Doodles.

Ingredients:

  • See instructions below

Preparation:

Red Cake

Posted by: Doodles
Mix:

1/2 ounce red food coloring 3 tablespoons instant cocoa 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon water (1/2 oz)

Cream:
1/2 cup shortening 1-1/2 cup granulated sugar
Add:
  • 2 eggs
  • cocoa mixture
Beat well - Make sure it's all blended smoothly.

Add:
  • 1 C. buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2-1/2 C. sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • scant teaspoon salt
Beat very well till smooth. Bake in greased and floured layer pans at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Test after 25 minutes with toothpick. Let stand for a few minutes before turning out. "THE" Frosting (not too sweet, but very good)

Cream:
  • 4 ounces butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
Beat till very fluffy!

Then add:
  • 3 tablespoons flour - 1 tablespoon at a time
  • 2/3 cup milk, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
Beat hard and long at high speed until very smooth and creamy and the gritty texture is gone. Trust me! You'll never make another frosting again. My sons are 37 and 40 and still request this cake and frosting. My grandkids are following suit. It is NOT low-fat or low-cal, but enjoying a very small piece now and then won't hurt.
Enjoy!

Frosting way too runnyAugust 31, 2009By serenabluebird
"The cake recipe was very good. The frosting recipe ought to be very good, but I think Doodles made a typo or something, because the proportions for it are wrong somehow. = = = ""THE"" Frosting (not too sweet, but very good) Maybe Doodles meant 1/3 c. milk and 2 c. sugar? I made the frosting as directed, and it's like soup. So, I added another cup of sugar and it was still runny. So I added ANOTHER cup of sugar and it is still runny. So, It's sitting here on the counter as I write, and it now has THREE CUPS OF SUGAR IN IT AND IT'S STILL TOO RUNNY. I guess I will beat in some powdered sugar to firm it up. Sigh. Too bad it isn't turning out, Doodles made it sound like the best frosting recipe ever."
