Ingredients:
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, stir before measuring
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 egg
- 2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk
- 1 cup walnuts, chopped

- Frosting:
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 1 tablespoon soft butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cup sifted confectioners' sugar, divided
- 5 tablespoons half-and-half, heated until hot
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 350°. Sift flour together with baking soda and salt; set aside. Cream shortening and brown sugar; beat in egg, melted chocolate, and vanilla. Add flour mixture and buttermilk; blend well. Stir in nuts. Drop level tablespoonfuls of dough onto greased baking sheets about 2 inches apart. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, until top springs back when lightly touched. Cool then frost with creamy frosting.
Frosting: In a medium bowl blend 2 tablespoons shortening, 1 tablespoon butter, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 1/2 cup of the sifted confectioners' sugar. Alternately add 2 1/2 cups sifted confectioners sugar with 5 tablespoons of half and half, beating until smooth and creamy.
Makes about 3 to 4 dozen chocolate cookies.
