Top this yummy chocolate pie with whipped cream or whipped topping.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • baked pie crust or purchased crumb crust, 9-inch

Preparation:

Mix cocoa and flour in top of a double boiler over hot water and whisk in about half of the 1 cup of water, just enough to make a smooth paste. Blend in the sugar and the beaten egg yolks and add remaining water and milk. Cook over low until the mixture is thick; add butter and vanilla. Pour into baked pie crust. Top with whipped cream or whipped topping, or use the egg whites to make a meringue. Chill thoroughly

Just OK, Member MrsPortner

I sifted the cocoa, sugar, and flour together in a bottom-heavy saucepan, then added half the Hot water just to get it started. Well, that alone was the thick gooey consistency it should have resulted in before adding the other liquids. Once I added the remaining water, vanilla, and milk, it seemed to become waaaay too runny, and I wisked for 20 minutes before calling the white flag of additional flour and cornstarch. I would recommend doubling the cocoa, flour, keep the sugar the same, and cutting the water in HALF. I would try that, or just muscle through and keep adding thickeners until desired consistency. And maybe increase the temperature a tad to incorporate better? But this recipe doesn't make that close to easy with kids running around and a clock working against you to make something yummy in a reasonable time-frame. But, it tastes good, so I will rate it with two stars, as Just OK.
