Christmas Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Preparation:

Lightly grease baking sheets. Preheat oven to 400°. Cream shortening with butter and sugar until smooth and creamy.Beat in eggs, one at a time. Sift dry ingredients together into a separate bowl. Combine milk and vanilla. A little at a time, stir dry ingredients into creamed mixture, alternating with milk and vanilla mixture. Blend well. Chill dough for 2 hours. Roll dough out to about 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut out as desired. Place on baking sheets. Brush with a little milk and sprinkle with sugar or colored sugar, if desired. Bake at 400° for about 6 minutes, or until lightly browned around edges. Makes about 7 to 8 dozen 2-inch cookies.
