Ingredients:

  • 3 c. sifted self-rising flour
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Raisins (optional)
  • Nuts (optional)
  • Butter

Preparation:

Place flour in a large bowl. Add shortening and cut it into the flour with a fork. Add the buttermilk a little at a time while constantly stirring with the fork. When this mixture becomes a stiff dough, turn it out on a floured dough board (or clean counter). Knead lightly and roll dough fairly thin. Spread soft butter all over the dough. Sprinkle heavily with sugar and lightly with cinnamon. You can add raisins and nuts, if desired. Roll up like a jelly roll. Slice about 1/2 inch thick and place side by side in a rectangular pan that has been generously buttered. Bake at 350° for about 10 minutes.
