This is an old-fashioned sugar cream pie. It's a custard type of pie flavored with butter, vanilla, and nutmeg.

  • 1 (9-inch) pie shell, baked
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups half and half
  • 5 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • yellow food coloring, a drop or two for color, optional
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • freshly grated nutmeg


Mix sugar, cornstarch, half-and-half, and salt in saucepan. Cook to boiling point. Add vanilla, food coloring, if using, and the butter; return to heat. Cook, stirring constantly until thickened. If there are any lumps, put through a find sieve. Pour the mixture into pie shell and sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake at 325° for 35 to 45 minutes or until firm and lightly browned.

Serves 6 to 8.

best recipe I have found for sugar cream pie', Member cookymama

I was raised in Indiana the only state where you can purchase sugar cream pies in the store. They are made and sold by Wicks. My husband and I relocated to Louisiana, and had to take them home with us when we visited. This recipe is the closest I have ever found to their pies. If you have never had a sugar cream pie, you have to try this recipe. It is awesome'
