Homemade Baked Beans, Slow Cooker

Ketchup, molasses, and brown sugar give these slow cooker baked beans barbecue flavor. The recipe is made with dried navy beans or a similar bean.


  • 3 cups of dried white navy beans, soaked and simmered until tender, following package directions
  • 1 1/2 c ketchup
  • 1 1/2 c water
  • 1/4 c molasses
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 6 slices of uncooked salt pork or bacon, diced, about 4 to 6 ounces
  • 1 c brown sugar


Place all ingredients in slow cooker; cover and cook for 8 to 10 hours on low. Stir a few times, if possible.

Very good, but needs adjusting, Member rmstrttn

I found this recipe to be delicious, but I have to admit that I modified it heavily and it needs further modification. So, let me say that as a base recipe for this first-time baked-beans maker, it was excellent. First of all, it needs WAY more liquid than specified if you are going to cook it for 10 hours in the crock pot like I did (the edges and bottom burned to the crock pot). Probably another cup and a half would do the trick. Second, 1 cup of sugar seems to be way too much for a dinner meal to my way of thinking. I put in two tablespoons. A 1/2 tablespoon of salt would probably be enough. 1 tablespoon puts more sodium into the batch (per cup) than a can of baked beans contains. I cut the amount of ketchup in half and replaced the rest with prepared mustard. Yummy! I also added a lot of fresh veggies, some tomatoes and fresh herbs. It really did turn out fabulous, but as I said, it needs modification.
