Old Fashioned Beef Stew

An old-fashioned beef stew recipe for the slow cooker.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 2 pounds lean stew beef
  • 1 onion, quartered
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth or bouillon
  • 1 tsp. salt, or to taste
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 6 carrots, cut in pieces
  • 6 med. potatoes, cut in pieces
  • 1/3 cup cold water blended with 3 tablespoons flour

Preparation:

Combine flour, paprika and garlic powder in a food storage bag; add stew beef and toss to coat. Brown coated beef in hot oil in a large skillet; transfer to the Crockpot. Add the remaining ingredients except for water and flour mixture. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hoursm, until vegetables are tender. About 30 minutes before serving, add flour mixture to the pot. Turn to high and cook until thickened.
Serves 6 to 8.

absolute best beef stew, Member linphelps

There are so many recipes to try so I have VERY select few recipes that I'll make again. This is one that I've added to that list. This beef stew was the absolute best I've made yet. I followed the recipe except for one addition since we like a little spice in most of our foods. I added one diced jalapeno pepper. Oh, and I had an 8oz container of button mushrooms and threw that into the crockpot during the last half hour of cooking. Simple yet the most flavorful beef stew ever! Also had some avocados which I sliced and added to each serving, giving it a nice additional freshness. Excellent!
