Chili with Beef and Sausage

This is a great chili to enjoy on a cold winter day. Serve this chili with fresh baked cornbread or crusty rolls.

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 8 ounces smoked sausage, such as andouille or apple chicken sausage
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 red or green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (4 ounces) mild green chili peppers
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons diced jalapeno peppers, or to taste
  • 2 cans (14.5 ounces each) diced tomatoes or fire-roasted tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 teaspoon grill seasoning blend
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste


In a large skillet or saute pan, brown the ground beef and sausage with onion until meat is no longer pink. Add the bell pepper and garlic and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute longer. Transfer to the slow cooker and add remaining ingredients; cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours.

Serves 6 to 8.
