Meaty Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

Meaty Spaghetti Sauce

Ground beef and Italian sausage make this slow cooker spaghetti sauce hearty and flavorful. Add some Parmesan cheese to the sauce just before serving, and pass more at the table.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef, 85%
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried leaf basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • 2 cans (16 oz each) Italian-style tomatoes, broken up
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • Parmesan cheese, optional

Preparation:

Remove sausage from casings; brown with ground beef in a skillet, breaking up with a wooden spoon. Drain and discard excess fat. Transfer the meat mixture to the slow cooker insert with remaining ingredients. Stir well.

Cover and cook on low for 7 to 9 hours or on high for 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours. For thicker sauce, cook on high for the last 2 hours, removing the cover or leaving it ajar for the last hour.

Serves 6.
