INGREDIENTS:
PREPARATION:Cream butter, shortening, and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs; beat well. Sift together dry ingredients into a separate bowl. Add sifted dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Stir in dates, nuts, and orange zest. Pour into a greased 9-inch springform pan. Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, simmer orange juice and 1 cup sugar together until sugar dissolves. Prick top of cake all over with toothpick or fork. Pour orange juice mixture over cake; cool in the pan. When cooled, remove sides of pan. Just before serving, spread cake with whipped cream topping.
