Date Bread - Whole Wheat

This date bread makes 2 loaves. A dark date bread recipe from Jaclyn.


  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup rye flour
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups chopped dates
  • 1 cup chopped pecans, optional
  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter


Preheat oven to 350°. Grease two 8 1/2x4 1/2-inch loaf pans. In large bowl sift together dry ingredients. Beat in dates, nuts if using, buttermilk, and butter. Pour into 2 greased 8-inch loaf pans and let stand, covered, in warm place for 20 minutes. Bake 50 to 60 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean..
Makes 2 loaves of date bread.

Something must be missing, Member bmgregg

Was given wonderful dates by mother-in-law. Needed a low sugar recipe. This recipe gave me enough loaves to share. Batter was thick. Was suspicious - something must be missing. Baked it anyway and two big globs no matter how long it stayed in oven. Guess I'll try to make bread pudding and not waste those great dates and nuts.
