Grilled cheese Sandwiches

When I was growing up and made grilled cheese sandwiches, I buttered all sides of the bread, but these days I spread little or none on the inside. I usually choose thinly sliced American cheese in these sandwiches, but thinly sliced Cheddar, Swiss, or other cheese would be wonderful. These wonderful, comforting grilled cheese sandwiches are delicious with a bowl of tomato soup or chips and pickles.
