You may never purchase chocolate sauce again after tasting the rich flavor of this one. And it's so easy to make!
I don't know where my Aunt Lorna got this recipe but in was in the files she passed down to me, and I've been making it for years.
I makes a wonderful gift, as the recipient can keep it in the refrigerator for at least a couple of weeks and pour it on anything that benefits from a chocolate sauce.
It's especially wonderful after the holidays when something sweet is wanted for just a few calories. Then I put in on a dish of bananas and pecans, sweeten yogurt with it, or use it on angel food cake with oranges.
Yield: 2 cups
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tiny dash salt (1/16 teaspoon)
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Preparation:
Mix the sugar, cocoa, flour, and salt in a heavy medium saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of the milk and stir to a paste. Stir in the remaining milk and vanilla and bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring often. As soon as the sauce comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer very gently for 5 minutes, stirring often. Cool and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, covered.
