Molasses Cookies

These cookies, from Cyndi, are cut out on the baking sheet. Start this cookie recipe a day in advance.

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1-3 teaspoons whiskey, or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 1/4 cup flour

Preparation:

Combine shortening, brown sugar, molasses, water and spices bring to a boil. Remove from heat; set aside to cool. Cover and leave mixture at room temperature 8 hours. Combine flour, salt, soda, stir flour mixture into syrup mixture. Chill several hours. Divide dough into 4 portions. Work with 1 portion at a time, leave the rest refrigerated. Place dough on a lightly floured cookie sheet, roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with floured cutters, leaving about 1 1/2 inches between cookies. Remove excess dough. Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.
