  • 16 ounces walnut pieces
  • 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

In a slow cooker, stir the walnuts and butter together until well blended. Add the confectioners' sugar, stirring to coat walnuts evenly. Cover and cook on HIGH for 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the nuts are coated with a crisp glaze, about 2 hours.

Transfer the nuts to a serving bowl. In a small bowl, combine the spices and sift them over the nuts, stirring to coat evenly. Cool the nuts completely before serving.

This sounds a marvellous dish, and not just for Christmas & New Year, but anytime! Here's a variation: I make sugared walnuts very like this, using soft brown sugar and with allspice and ginger, but instead of the cinnamon I sometimes add coriander, and also two VERY strong shots of espresso coffee. Put the finished nuts out in very small bowls, or otherwise they all get eaten up in a flash!
