Raisin Nut Bread Recipe

Spread with a little cream cheese for delicious snack.

  • 3 cups sifted regular flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2/3 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup melted shortening, cooled
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts


Into a large bowl, sift together sugar, salt. baking powder, soda, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Beat egg slightly in a small bowl; stir in milk, molasses, and melted shortening; add to flour mixture all at once. Stir just until blended. Stir in raisins and walnuts. Pour into a well-greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 1 hour, or until a wooden pick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean.

Cool raisin nut bread in pan on a wire rack 10 minutes. Loosen around edges with a knife; turn out onto rack and cool completely. Wrap in plastic wrap or foil and store overnight for easiest slicing.

Too salty, Member carol_oneil

This recipe calls for baking soda and baking powder (both have a lot of sodium) PLUS salt. I should have known it would taste too salty and it was. Almost wonder if there was an error in the recipe. Very disappointing.
