When I was growing up and made grilled cheese sandwiches, I buttered all sides of the bread, but these days I spread little or none on the inside. I usually choose thinly sliced American cheese in these sandwiches, but thinly sliced Cheddar, Swiss, or other cheese would be wonderful. Make these with homemade bread for a real treat!

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 8 minutes

Total Time: 13 minutes

Ingredients:

  • sliced bread
  • softened butter
  • thinly sliced cheese, American or Cheddar, as you like

Preparation:

Generously butter one side of a slice of bread.

Arrage cheese slices to make 1 layer on the unbuttered side of the bread slice. Top with another slice of bread, then butter the top of that slice. Repeat with more bread, butter, and cheese, as needed.

On a griddle over medium heat, grill the sandwiches until browned on the bottom. Flip and continue browning on the other side. The cheese should be melted by the time both sides are browned.

Serve grilled cheese sandwiches with a cup of soup, chips, or fries and pickles.
