Tuna Strata is made with tuna, bread, eggs, Swiss cheese, and seasonings.

Cook Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter, divided
  • 12 slices white bread, divided
  • 2 cans (7 ounces each) tuna, drained
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 5 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon-style mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or more

Preparation:

Generously butter a 12 x 8-inch baking dish. Trim 6 slices of the bread to fit the bottom of the baking dish. Butter the top of each slice of bread with 1/2 teaspoon of butter. Place bread slices buttered-side up in the baking dish. In a medium bowl flake tuna; add celery, onion and mayonnaise; mix together to blend well. Spread tuna mixture evenly over bread; sprinkle with cheeses. Trim remaining 6 slices of bread and spread on one side with remaining butter. Arrange slices, buttered-side up, over the tuna and cheese mixture. In medium bowl beat eggs with milk, mustard and hot pepper sauce; pour over the casserole. Bake at 350° 35 to 40 minutes, or until puffed and lightly browned. Let stand for about 10 minutes before serving.
