Ingredients:

  • 5 cups cubed firm, crusty bread
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 large sweet onions, halved or quartered and cut into
  • thin slices
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried leaf thyme
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 to 1 cup diced cooked ham, optional

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350°. Place bread cubes in a 1 1/2-quart soufflé dish or casserole. Melt butter in large skillet. Cook onions until slightly limp, or translucent. Pour butter and onions over the bread. Scatter thyme and cheese over the top. Blend cream into eggs until mixture is light and frothy. Add salt and pepper if desired. Pour over mixture in casserole dish. Press down to make sure bread is thoroughly soaked. Bake 45 minutes, or until knife inserted near center comes out clean.
