What a great recipe! I served this up at a dinner for chilli aficionado friends and it was a huge hit cooked exactly as directed - a definite keeper!

I made this recipe for a neighbor's gathering on Christmas Eve. I never get anything started 8 hours ahead so I made it stove top, simmering for a couple of hours and then put it in the crockpot at the tail end to add the beans as well as keep it warm for the casual dinner. The only thing I did differently is use about 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice and cloves as I never succeed with the tying up in cheesecloth thing. Everyone loved it. Asked for the recipe and since I had modified it I called it ""Icelandic Cincinnati Chili"". (Being a half-Icelander, I always get away when something isn't perfect by calling it Icelandic.) My husband's mother, who was from Cincinnati, used to make Cincinnati Chili and he always raved about it. I had never tasted it. He raved about this version, saying it was just like his mother's. I emailed my version of the recipe to my sister-in-law who is a very good cook. Her husband...my husband's brother--said it stunk. Not at all like his mother's. I think I may have forgotten to give them an ingredient , perhaps. So my suggestion is don't try to turn it into an Icelandic version. Cook it just as the recipe calls for. Personally, I think it was great and easy, which made it even better.
