Date Nut Bread Recipe

This bread was sickening sweet ~ both my husband and I could not eat much of it. I put cream cheese on it and it helped to cut the sweetness, but I wouldn't make it again.

This recipe is very easy and healthy. I double the recipe to make a large amount. Serve it warmed slightly (10 seconds) in the microwave and add a little creamed cheese. Awesome!!!!! To make it a little richer I add an extra egg and a little more butter, more dates and nuts (pecans). Everyone loves the result!

I too have longed for the delicious steamed breads, and this recipe is the best I've found! I use the date pellets sold at health food stores, organic walnuts and love to add about 1/8 c. candied ginger slices finely minced. Butter the cans really well, and use aluminum foil tied securely with string for the steaming. It does take as much as 4 hours or possibly more, but just keep the water level about 1/2 way up the can. They should slide out of cans so you don't have to cut out end of can. This recipe will give you three good-sized loaves, and wrapped well they age very mellow. I like to have a bit of shaved Jarlsberg on it, OMG, I gotta go make a batch!
