A good foundation with potential for improvementFebruary 24, 2013 By JSRFgirlywhirl
I took the advice of a previous reviewer and doubled the amounts of sugar and added cinnamon. I kept that same recommendation but I ALSO added about two tablespoons of lemon juice, nutmeg, and some cocoa mocha powder along with some vanilla extract. These came out great! These were the thickest rising pancakes I have ever made, and were a hit with my boyfriend. This recipe yielded me about 8 pancakes, using an 1/2C measure for each portion. :) I would have included a picture, but I didn't have a chance to take one! I served these with oven-made bacon, and used the grease from the bacon to fry up some eggs along with it.

A couple changes and perfecto!February 17, 2013 By jessenbaker
We make these pancakes for our family every weekend, with a few slight changes. I add vanilla and cinnamon, double the sugar and use salted butter so I only add 1/2 the salt the recipe calls for. One batch consistently feeds a family of five :)

YUMMY!!!December 04, 2012 By gloverbaby
I completely made this my own! I put 1 teaspoon of vanilla, added cinnamon and mint chips. THIS WAS INCREDIBLE!!!! My family devoured them as they were being made. I'm surprised there was any leftovers. I also used 50/50 wheat and white flour. It was the best!!!! <3

super runnyDecember 02, 2012 By adamsmommy12
I made these pancakes for my son's birthday breakfast. The batter was extremely runny, and I had to add at least 3/4 cup of flour. They still came out way too thin, not fluffy at all. When we finally got to try them, since they took a ton of time to brown, the flavor was awful. Tasted like plain dough. I will most certainly not be making these again.

These were delicious and sooooo easy!!October 13, 2012 By annemg
I made these this morning with my 7yr. old granddaughter. They were very easy to make. They came out perfect, the outside was nicely browned and the inside was a nice light texture. I noticed the first ones we made didn't rise as much as the ones where the batter had sat a little longer. I used 1 1/2 cups of milk. Next time I might go a little more toward the 1 3/4 cup. My husband liked the thicker ones so I'll have to do some experimenting.

Pancakes were a successMarch 15, 2012 By AnnabelleDM
I wanted to make some pancakes for my bff's birthday but since we werent around i made em this morning and it came out great! To be honest, i didnt follow the recipe totally- Only one tsp of baking powder, and at first i added only one cup of milk (bdw, a cup means a cup, like a mug of tea) Then i made the first batch it came out a lil thick so i added the rest of the milk and that did it good. Oh and a lil more sugar makes it taste awesome. My girlfriend really enjoyed it. Now she zonked out on the couch full of pancake and that saved me buyin a birthday gift! (Guys, take a hint!)

I made this w/ 1 cup of whole wheat and 1 cup of white flour. I used the baking powder- but it was double acting, I'm not sure if it was thick because of that or not. However, they were pretty good! I had to add a lot more milk due to the thickness, but it was easy to make, quick and great! I would make it again. Thanks for the recipes on here. They are a wonderful to refer to.

So simple even a novice could make itNovember 07, 2010 By jdburke27
I substituted self riding flour for the all purpose flour and did not add the paking powder and used only 1/4 t of salt. I also added fresh frozen blueberries. The pancakes were super fluffy & HUGE. Much better than a runny box mix or an out of the can mix one can get from the store. I do like a thicker pancake and if one prefers a bit thinner batter, then adding just a touch more milk while you are mixing will help. You don't want the mix too runny or you will end up with crepes instead of a pancake. I will make this again. Perfect Weekend breakfast and super easy to make.

Fluffy Pancakes!November 04, 2010 By LittleIrishLassie

Quite the fluffy pancake!June 20, 2010 By purduephotog
My wife is a big fan of fluffy thick pancakes- and these were winners. I sifted each ingredient and mixed the eggs/milk separate. Only modification was to add more baking powder- about 1 1/4 tablespoon. Texture wasn't 'light' but it was big, thick, and perfect- not rubbery as someone else reported. We'll cook'em again.

Had no problem with this recipe. Followed instructions (remember to sift flour) and it came out fantastic! Yielded 14 decent sized pancakes which were quickly eaten by the family- won't be buying mixes anymore. P.S. Used Promise instead of butter and it worked fine.

These Basic Pancakes are great! They are very easy to make and the recipe calls for just the bare minimum (I could make 'em from what I had already in my cupboard). Alter the milk to taste if you like cake-like or fluffier pancakes. Taste really good.

Yummy!February 28, 2010 By Kansas221
Made these today for the first time. I was concerned after reading other reviews that they didn't come out, thanks to the reviewer that mentioned sifting as a requirement. I don't know a ton about baking, but I do have a sifter so I used it and followed the directions just as written. They came out perfect, no additional milk required. I'm not sure what others did, but they really came out a perfect consistancy. They were great and I won't buy a box of premade mix ever agian!

Light and FluffyJanuary 31, 2010 By desscott
For all you who came out with ""hockey pucks"" or claim a ""waste of ingredients,"" you should probably stick with instant oatmeal for breakfast, or maybe even cold cereal. These were great! And, the trick of waiting until the pancake bubbles before turning over is a sure way to come out with the perfect pancake. For the failures, you probably forgot to sift the flour BEFORE measuring. That's why you all thought you needed more milk! Sift before you diss, amateurs.

Very good!January 03, 2010 By immom234ever
Just like IHOP! Make sure you get your batter thin enough... That is what the extra milk is for! It should be thin enough to pour easily out of a measuring cup. I used a four cup pyrex. Mix as directed and then if it is a little thick, mine was alot thick, use the extra milk to thin it out. Very good pancakes... I looked up this recipe because I did not have any self rising flour. I will always use bread flour to make pancakes from now on!

Delicious and EasyNovember 14, 2009 By bulletproofleni
Common sense or Cooking 101 is needed for any recipe!! I reduced the salt, and added milk or water as I saw fit. I also adjusted the amount of salt and baking powder...again, depending on the texture and taste of the batter. I also used more butter because even if buttery pancakes are heart attack inducing they're amazingly good. Nonetheless, it was so ridiculous easy to make and the pancakes were yummy. I made them for my host family in South America and they loved them.

Does need a little milkJuly 31, 2009 By Jefflee1
OK I made these this morning. I was out of my normal mix . Yes you need to add a little more milk, water, or whatever your choice of liquid is. And they were fine, actually they were pretty good. Upon reading the comments abut the recipe . I would like to make a couple points. Mine was not salty, but I used Kosher salt. First wet goes on dry ingredients, if you mix them and find it is to thick ADD SOME MILK !!! You should NEVER ! let me repeat NEVER !! Over mix any pancake batter !!! 10 seconds of mixing is more than enough mixing time. YES the lumps will cook out. When I mixed the wet and the dry, I knew by 5 seconds it was to think, I added some milk, mixed another 4 seconds , and life was good !! So for all those people who complain about hockey pucks, it is YOUIR OWN FAULT !!!! not the recipes. ( Any pancake recipe will give you hockey pucks if you over mix it) If you don't have enough common sence to know what pancake batter need to be like, go to the store and get the ready-to-pour stuff. Over all I like this recipe. it is a good basic pancake recipe. The taste was good, Mouth feel was good. It was easy to follow The reason only 4 stars, it does need more milk.

The perfect childhood pancakeMarch 25, 2009 By Efa0303
This recipe made perfect, fluffy pancakes that I will make again and again. It's really simple, and easy to embellish with blueberries, strawberries or bananas. I added a dash of sugar (less than half a teaspoon) just to make sure the pancakes wouldn't be too salty. But this was so easy to make, and a million times better than box pancakes.

Obnoxiously ThickFebruary 08, 2009 By amandahoskin
This recipe would be more appropriate if i were looking to make concrete mix. Although the potential was there, this mix was distastefully dry, lacking crucial moisture necessary in a successful pancake. I do not feel I was set up with the tools to succeed in this pancake making process given this recipe. I would strongly advise using an alternate recipe.

i had a friend over and we really wanted pancakes but we didn't have mix. so we made the pancakes (tons of them) and sat down to eat. i myself only took 3 bites, and my friend could barely finish the first pancake.I would never make these again, and you shouldn't, hey turn out dense, chewy, and very gross. they are the complete opposite of what a pancake should taste like. what a waste of ingredients and time.

Awesome Recipe!October 26, 2008 By dragonfly_grrl
I just finished eating a plate of these pancakes for my Sunday breakfast, and they are fabulous! I woke up this morning with a craving for pancakes and no baking mix, so I googled ""pancake recipes"" and got here. And I'm so glad I did; baking mix pancakes are now a thing of the past in my house. I did make the addition of some diced apples fried in butter with some brown sugar and cinnamon (they were sitting around getting spotty), but the recipe would be perfectly fine all on its own. I loved how fluffy and tender they were, and that they weren't too sweet. My husband has warned me that this will be his breakfast request every Sunday for the foreseeable future, and I gotta tell you, that's fine by me. Something this simple just should not be this good. Thanks for sharing it! :)

First time pancakesSeptember 20, 2008 By bethers89
This is my first time making pancakes and it was really easy. I used 2 eggs by mistake but they still turned out fluffy and soft. The lack of sugar is good because I just have them with syrup. RECIPE TIP: mix several fresh basil leaves (chopped) into the batter before cooking and then serve with bacon, eggs, fried banana and tomato.

I agree with the other review - use at LEAST 2 cups of milk - if not two and a quarter. These are great without the vanilla, but a splash can't hurt. Also, tip: let the batter sit for five minutes or so until the surface is bubbly.

good basic pancakeJuly 10, 2008 By ardent.fire
Recipe definitely needs extra milk, and I halved most of the ingredients because I was only making it for myself. I added a little vanilla for flavour, as well as a few chocolate chips while the first side was cooking. This is a good basic recipe that can easily have stuff added to it... bananas, chocolate chips, blueberries, sugar, other fruits. The secret is to cook the pancakes over medium-high heat in a greased pan until you see bubble holes on top, then you flip and leave for 10-15 seconds. That really lightens them up.

Good with tweaksMay 18, 2008 By Jillithan
I love this recipe, and I make it every weekend, but I don't follow the recipe to a T. I always add about a teaspoon of vanilla for flavor, and 1.5 cups of milk is NOT enough. The batter ends up way too thick. I always add usually another 1/2 cup or so. I just eyeball it until my batter is the consistency I like. Other than that, it's great!

dumb peopleMarch 17, 2008 By ceci_v
I liked this recipe alot! the only mistake i did was added too much batter which made pancake cook forever and not throughly, i suggest you make smaller pancakes and they will be perfect. Also i see people complaining about the thickness of the batter, THEY ARE MADE FROM SCRATCH! of course they are going to be fluffy!! if you want nasty runny water based pancakes then keep buying storebought pancake mix!! also i see people complaining about the blandness of the batter, first of all you shouldnt taste it raw, you could get salmonella from the uncooked egg (although i did it too, lol) it tasted this way because the baking powder hasn't yet reacted! once the pancake is fully cooked its delicious! if you are still paranoid about the uncooked batter flavor you could try adding chocolate chips, sugar or maple syrup, that should help even though they are very good alone. Happy cooking!

This recipe is great but you must add the extra milk like another reader said. I added a little extra vanilla too but I do that with everything, cakes, cookies etc... I also put a little half and half in the 2 cups of milk. They were really good!

YUMMO!November 24, 2007 By dwindlingdiva
Based on the suggestions of other reviewers, I increased the milk to a total of 2 cups. Also, I added about 2 tsp of vanilla and approx 1/2 tbls of sugar. My family wolfed them down. It made approx 5-6 large pancakes. DELICIOUS!!

Not 4 but 2November 12, 2007 By JaniceAndersen
I think this recipe is enough food for 2 hungry adults. I used soy milk and it turned out fine. A tip to get rid of the lumpiness; pour half the milk into the bowl then all the flour mix and mix until even and add the rest of the milk. You have to add an extra 1/2 cup off milk to make these ok. Good and easy recipe but you need to make some alterations (the extra milk..)

Good and simpleNovember 11, 2007 By Opwie
Very good and simple recipe. I took the advice and added 1/2 cup off milk. I also used 1cup of whole wheat flour and 1cup of regular. Then I made a mistake and added extra salt. They didn't need that. Now I know for the next time!

Wholesome and HealthyOctober 28, 2007 By AndreaGould
I loved this recipe. It was simple and the syrup was the sugar for these pancakes. I like that because I'm concerned about the amount of sugar my children consume. So, this recipe was great. My children loved it. There were no complaints.

DoughyOctober 21, 2007 By Kristiexox
The pancakes didn't taste like anything and they puffed up with the littlest amount of batter. No Taste. Very bland. Not good at all.

Fat PancakesOctober 20, 2007 By JamieFarquhar
These pancakes are terrible. I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out thick and chewy. I then mixed 2 more cups of skim milk in and they were better. But not good. Try another recipe.

Amazing but needs some tweekingOctober 09, 2007 By qaz1958
Yep I agree this recipe most definitely needed something else..........but once I added more milk (actually I added 1/2 & 1/2) and thinned out this mixture, the pancakes were amazingly light and fluffy, and some of the best texture ever eatten. I did also add oil to the pan because this recipe needed oil as mentioned on one review..... Even my husband commented one morning and said, ""you can tell these are not out of a box!!!"" So feel safe making these just add extra milk to thin and oil to the pan....GREAT.

Great Basic Pancake Recipe!September 21, 2007 By Chanda_1969
Fast, easy, turned out great and I'm enjoying them right now! I just made 1/4 of the recipe and it made 3 big fluffy pancakes! Since everything was already out, I also added the dry ingredients to a ziplock bag and labeled it Pancake Mix with all ingredients plus the other ingredients to add. I think I'll throw a handful of blueberries and nuts in the next batch!

Works great for meSeptember 16, 2007 By jandrese
I've been using this recipe for a couple of years now and it has worked great. One important detail that people miss is that it requires you to sift the flour _before_ measuring. If you skip this step you will have too much flour and a thick batter. It's easy enough to add more milk, but if you sift the flour you will not need to. In my experience it is good enough to just scoop up a cup of flour, dump it back in a couple of times and the scoop up a cup of the loose flour you just dumped back in. Another note: Because this recipe has butter in it you don't necessarily need to butter the pan. This is only recommended with nonstick pans, but I haven't buttered the pan in ages now.

Eh.August 27, 2007 By iamjusttree
Like other users said, this recipe definitely needs more milk, and since I like my pancakes sweet, I added some granulated sugar as well. However, once I achieved the consistency and taste I wanted, the pancakes cooked quickly (though one seemed cooked from the outside but was under-cooked), came out very fluffy, and may have actually been some of the best I've ever made. Still only two stars for the recipe, though...

add more milkAugust 06, 2007 By cheffman
when you make this recipe you must add more milk so it will become more smooth. if you like sweeter pancakes add a tablespoon of white granulated suger and a tablespoon of brown sugar

I think I'll just stick to my old recipe...August 03, 2007 By _c00ker_
The pancakes were okay. The recipe probably needs either less flour or more milk. It was pretty hard to cook them and when I did they were still a bit raw inside. sincerely, _c00ker_

No Problems HereAugust 01, 2007 By NancyS13
I didn't run into any problems like the other person did. They cooked up fast so maybe the other person didn't heat the griddle first? Works fine if you start with a hot griddle. I have a milk allergy so didn't taste it, but the kids said it was great.

Must Use Low HeatJuly 31, 2007 By typlerd
I tried this recipe last week and must agree with the previous user that they did seem to take a while to make and were very thick. Using a low to medium heat though, each pancake did not take too long. They turned out quite well. As for lumpiness and all that other jazz, I advise that you mix the ingredients well. I had no problems of this sort.

Don't make these pancakes!July 29, 2007 By jocmtl
These pancakes turned out lumpy, stiff and gummy. The batter was unusually thick; it would not pour off the ladle but had to be scaped off. Because the batter was so thick, the pancakes cooked unevenly and very slowly (otherwise, they were burned outside and uncooked inside). When we compared with other recipes, we found that most use less flour, less baking powder and oil instead of butter. Too bad! Our toddler ate them anyway, but most of the batter ended up in the garbage.
