Joan's Easy Peach Cobbler
5 out of 5Wonderful recipe!August 13, 2011
By Mystyklrvn
Obviously for those who did not give a good review either A... did not make it right, or B... have never eaten true southern peach cobbler! The only thing I've altered is I used a 13x9 inch glass baking dish. The recipe comes out perfect! My grandmother used to have a recipe that was identical to this one, but over time, forgot the recipe(she's 87 years old!). Being raised in a southern home, I can assure you... this is as perfect as it gets! Thanks Joan for giving me back a piece of my history!
1 out of 5Not So Easy Cobbler!!August 09, 2011

I tried this recipe as it seemed easy enough, but it was terrible! There was way too much butter and it didn't bake evenly. The outsides of the cobbler were almost burnt while the inside was still liquid! I would not recommend this recipe at all!

Baking is all about ratios. When I mixed the ingredients, I remarked that it looked off. I rechecked the recipe ingredients and quantities. I don't recommend this recipe- unless you want a very messy half-done recipe. I will stick to my standards next time. Also, I think SouthernFood needs to review and revise this.

Having read the other comments, I too modified this recipe, and it turned out great. I melted the 4 ounces of butter, but only drizzled about 1 tablespoon into an 11x7 dark pan, and greased the bottom and sides with it. The rest of the melted butter I set aside. I used 1 cup flour plus only 1/2 cup sugar. In addition to the baking powder, I also added 1/2 tsp each of cinnamon and ground ginger, plus a few gratings of whole nutmeg. I felt that the cake component needed some spice, otherwise one may as well use pancake mix! I then added the remaining melted butter to the milk-vanilla mixture and stirred it all into the flour mix. Again, having read some scary reviews, I felt that the butter would be better incorporated by being mixed into the batter, rather than floating around elsewhere. It did make for a nice, glossy batter. I followed the rest of the recipe as written, using 3 peaches and a cup of sliced strawberries (which I was trying to use up). Otherwise, 4 peaches would have sufficed. In my oven, it baked for 35 minutes, came out perfectly cooked (no raw spots). It was a real treat.

Drop the stick of butter in an electric skillet set at 375, add the batter and the peaches, put on the lid and then just serve it upside down! (top doesn't brown but the bottom does and it is still easy, quick and delicious!)

I made this cobbler a couple weeks ago but I used half the melted butter, used an 8-in. square pan, placed fresh, sliced peaches on top of butter, sugared them a little and sprinkled on cinnamon, then made the batter and pour on top of peaches. It came out awesome and easy....will make again with the modifications I made....yum!

This turned out a mess. Something about putting melted butter on the bottom of baking dish....then the batter...then the peaches did not work at all. I think the butter and the batter should be mixed TOGETHER ...the peaches should go first in the baking dish and then the batter on top. Awful. Just awful.
1 out of 5Not that goodAugust 11, 2010

I noticed there is no egg in this recipe...I think it needs something. The cake would be nice if it had some texture and not so oily - buttery. I used fresh Colorado peaches which were small, so I didn't want them to bake them to mush. I baked for an extra 5 minutes then broiled the top to brown it a bit. Of course the peaches are delicious, the middle is juicy, but the upper part retained too much butter. I used a rectangle pan, so maybe a smaller pan would be better.

I read some of the reviews prior to making this recipe. I did cut down on the amount of sugar to half a cup. The peaches I used weren't that sweet to begin with so cutting down on the sugar was still a good idea.
5 out of 5SUPERB!!!June 26, 2010
By StefanVidak
Never made one before but this came out as something to be proud of. I made this with fresh Apricots, someone had kindly gifted me a basketful. Having read previous reviews, I did modify this. Only used half the butter (2oz was plenty) and only used 3/4 cup of sugar. 8 Apricots (just over 1lb in weight) thinly sliced and placed on top of the melted butter and then sprinkled with light brown sugar. The batter was made as directed but I added 2 teaspoons of ground Ginger instead of the Cinnamon. It did take 45 minutes to cook but it wasn't a problem. Served with good quality Vanilla ice-cream...... What a treat!!!

I followed this recipe according to the instructions, but the cobbler ended up gooey in the middle even if I cooked it for 30 min. It is also kind of sweet. I think if I added more flour or less milk and bake it for 45 min., it should be good. I will try it again with a little variation on the cooking time and less amount of milk & butter.
4 out of 5A bit too sweet, but yummy!March 05, 2010
By juliajt
You could omit about a cup of sugar from this recipe and have an even yummier cobbler. I substituted vanilla extract with vanilla bean paste and it was to die for. Also, at a high altitude it takes about an extra 5-10 minutes for it to totally cook. I used canned peaches mixed with fresh and that made a nice consistency.

I don't know if it's an American sugar loving thing or what (I'm a Euro) but I reduced the sugar in this recipe by a whole decilitre (1 cup = 2,5 dl) and it was STILL too sweet. Reducing it by more than half next time. Otherwise, however, it was as easy and quick as promised, and quite tasty. Even with canned peaches. And it baked perfectly in about 35 minutes. A warning, though: go easy on the cinnamon. I used a little more than the recipe called for because I happen to like cinnamon, and it was a mistake. You don't want your cinnamon to get quite this uppity.
5 out of 5Peach Cobbler and How Easy It Can BeSeptember 23, 2009
By rwells54
I am a 55 year old male that does not bake anything and I was able to pull it off without a hitch. This recipe was so straight forward. The Peach Cobbler turned out so good that I now bring it to parties and football games. Everyone loves it and I have given out the web site for others to pull the recipe. I was tempted to claim it as an old family recipe handed down for generations but I gave ABOUT.com and Joan their credit. Go ahead and make one for yourself tonight, you deserve it!

This recipe is really easy to make. I would reduce the amount of butter next time. It was kind of swimming in butter. Otherwise, it was delicious. I used really ripe fresh peaches and they were naturally sweet.
3 out of 5Tasty, but edges burned while center barely cookedAugust 28, 2009
By cooknmama
The cobbler was very moist and tasty, but the center never fully cooked. After baking 30 minutes, I checked every 5 minutes until it baked for a total of 45 minutes. The outer edges and the fruit on top started to burn, but the center was still very pale. We had it warm with vanilla ice cream. My husband and son LOVED IT. I thought it was good, but it was a bit too buttery for me. (Recipe has 90+ grams of fat!!!) I think I'll stick with the cobbler recipes that have the fruit on the bottom and the batter on top, which tend to cook more evenly.

I doubled the recipe and baked it in a glass 8 x 13 pan. I did end up baking it longer than the recipe called for - until the top was slightly brown and the crust wasn't gooey. Everybody that tried it said it was about the best Peach Cobbler they'd ever had. I'm making it again today.

I don't know what form some of you get your butter in, but when I buy a pound of butter it has 4 sticks that are 4oz. each, not 8oz. Most all major brands of butter come in one pound boxes, 4 sticks to a box. I believe the recipe is correct as wrtten.

This is a delicious recipe that is easy to prepare. I did bake it for 45 minutes in a metal 8 by 8 baking dish and halved the cinnamon. (We aren't real big on cinnamon as we prefer the flavor of the fruit.)

This is a favorite recipe that both my dh's and my grandmothers used to make. The altitude may be causing some problems for some of you - I don't know much about that. I do know that we make this at our altitude of about 1800 ft and it does great. Have also made it in the mountains some at around 8000 ft and it's done fine in the dutch oven. It really does take 1 stick of butter (yes, nannyboy, 1 stick acutally is 4 oz, not 8!). Our recipe varies slightly in that we only put 1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder and 1/2 cup milk. We also sprinkle 1/2 cup Brown Sugar on top of the peaches and a 1/2 tsp of Nutmeg. We bake for 45 minutes at 375 -- this is YUMMY! I use this same recipe for berry cobblers - using 2 cups juice or mashed berries, 2 cups whole berries, and sugar added to berries if necessary for appropriate sweetness. I would never bother with any other cobbler recipe -- this one is the best tasting and the simplest to make as far as I'm concerned.

I made it for dinner this evening and it was the best cobbler I have ever eaten. I did have to bake it 15 minutes longer than the recipe stated but all ovens are different. Thank you for sharing this yummy dessert. I can hardly wait to have another bowl for a bedtime snack.

I was intrigued by the comments-either they loved it and it turned out perfectly, or it was a sticky gooey mess. I suspected that the bad experiences happened to people who were at high altitudes. Most Southern recipes were developed at 1,000 ft altitude (the South). I made this at 5,000 ft altitude, and it turned out perfectly. Tips for high altitude baking: 1. As others noted, use 1/2 stick of butter, not 1 stick. 2. Use a shiny silver pan. Don't use glass or dark pans. You want to slow down the baking chemistry, because high altitudes make the recipe bake faster than it should. 3. If in doubt, use a larger pan with less depth for more evening heating. 4. I substituted 1/4 cup sour cream for 1/4 cup milk. This gives the recipe more protein which will stabilize the cell structure and prevent the recipe from drying out-which makes cakes (and to a less extent, biscuits and cobblers) fall. 5. I used 1 large can sliced peaches because peaches are out of season. Still pretty good. 6. I used 1-1/2 tsp baking powder. See #2 for why. Less leavening power. 7. I added 1/4 cup more flour. You should add until the texture is similar to a cake mix, maybe just a little thicker. Hope this helps those of you in the mountains.

Delicious, yummy!! I just made this recipe and ate too much right out of the oven. I used an 11X7"" black metal pan. I checked it after 30 mins of baking time and it was not brown. So I baked it another 15 mins. That was too long. The sides of the dough were crispy and everything stuck to the bottom. But this is the best tasting peach cobbler I have ever eaten. I loved the crispy side pieces. It was only for me so it didn't matter how it looked. I will make it again and will make sure I don't overcook it. Now I dread washing the pan.

I made the mistake of not reading the reviews before making this dish. It was easy to make, but never got ""done"" in the oven. I left it in for much longer than it called, but it was still runny inside and tasted raw. Apparently this is a common problem with this recipe.

What a disaster! Rarely have I made something that was such a total flop! I baked it 15 minutes longer than the recipe stated and some of the cake batter was still raw, but the peaches were disintegrating. All that butter made the dough greasy. I can't think how to fix this, so I won't make it again.

This is so good that I made it lastnite and I have another in the oven as I'm writing this review. My family just can't get enough of it. I always fancied myself a really good baker, but this is like nothing I've ever made before!
3 out of 5Depends on if you like butterSeptember 05, 2008
By Esperanza32
I made this for my hubby and father-in-law. It looked weird going in the oven and coming out, but it was pretty tasty served with vanilla ice cream. I don't care much for butter or fatty food (so I probably don't belong on a Southern cooking site!), and I thought this turned out much too oily and buttery. It was yummy, but just too buttery for me. If I make it again, I'll only use 2-3 oz butter. BUT--my hubby and FIL went WILD about this recipe. They both love butter, and they thought this was great. FIL said ""dessert doesn't get any better than this"" and he talked about it for days afterwards. They'd give it 6 stars if they could. So, I think it all depends on if you like butter. The butter-lovers in my life thought this was fabulous, but I won't make it for my nutritionist mother!
5 out of 5Perfect!August 24, 2008
By BalrogsChelsea
Grammy's deer decided to leave some peaches on the trees for her to gather this year. Loaded down with sweet, fresh peaches, I decided that I'd try my hand at a cobbler. I ran across this recipe and thought I'd give it a shot, since it seemed so simple. I couldn't be more pleased! It really is just perfect! One issue I had was that the vanilla wanted to clog up in the dough in little pieces. Next time I'll mix the vanilla into the milk first. Also, I used a glass casserole and the baking time was much longer than the recipe calls for, but I just let the top get done and it did not burn and the crust is perfect, crispy and cakey. This recipe is a keeper. :) -- A tip to quickly peel fresh peaches is to score them quickly with a knife, blanch them for 30-45 seconds and quickly remove to an ice bath. The peels come right off. --- Thanks, Joan! And, thanks to all the reviewers who convinced me that this was the recipe out of the hundreds on the 'Net that I should try.

this cobbler turned out great but recipe needs some tweaking. The amount of butter called for..1 stick, is 8 ounces, not 4. it should read 1/2 stick of butter. also cooking time needs to be 45 minutes....baked perfectly like this and was delicious

I am by no means a novice baker (I've made wedding cakes before) but this recipe did not work at all for me. I made it in an 8 inch square pan, as suggested. The outsides started to burn while the middle was still very runny. Even when I tried to salvage the cake on the outsides of the pan, it was a mess. Hate to give it 1 star, but there's no way I'd make it again, sorry.

This is so good! And, it is so easy! To the person who gave this recipe one star, I think maybe she isn't from the South or measured wrong or something. This cobbler is PERFECT! I made a slight mistake and put the cinnamon in the dough and I used more than the recipe calls for...I always use more spices than recipes call for. But, even though I made a mistake, it is DELICIOUS!!!! Thank you, Joan! I'm eating it now with some cream. I wish I had some vanilla ice cream. Oh well....still GREAT!

YUM YUM. This is so delicious. My neighbor's mom used to make this same recipe, except with blackberries growing up. I think this would be delicious with any fruit. I mix my peaches with the 3 tbsp. sugar and let them sit in the fridge for a few hours before I make the cobbler. But my peaches are never of the mushy variety, so if you have very ripe peaches, I don't know if this would work as well. This recipe is easy, and absolutely wonderful. Ever since visiting this site, and cooking these southern dishes, my husband wonders how I got to be such a good cook overnight!

This was really easy to make and was delicious. However, the amount of sugar in the recipe made for a really sweet cobbler and an entire stick of butter made it a little too greasy for my taste. I used 3/4 cup of sugar instead of 1 cup and 3/4 stick of butter instead of the entire stick. Yum, yum!

This recipe is incredibly easy to make with pantry staple ingredients - so it can be made on an impulse with no pre-planning like I did on a lazy sunday afternoon. It came out very appetizing and delicious. Between me and my husband we finished it in no time!! It is a good dessert to make when entertaining too. I added about a quarter cup of chopped pecans on top and they were perfectly toasted and yummy when the dessert was done. This recipe is a keeper and I have already recommended to others in the family.

On Easter morning, I was thinking what can I make for a simple, yet delicious dessert? I know I had to go to the store, but when I came across this recipe, I had every ingredient! I read the reviews and said ""why not, give it a try"". My brother said this was the best cobbler he has ever had!! I have to agree, it's light and fluffy and you can actually taste a hint of vanilla! Yum, yum. I will be making this dessert for now on. Thanks to everyone who gave it a review because it is what made me want to try it. And thanks to Joan's Easy Peach Cobbler recipe!

Wonderful! It turned out really well, just the right amount of everything! Exactly how a cobbler should be! Breaddy, moist yet firm and full of flavor! Not overly greasy etc. Looked just like the photo! My family and neighbors LOVED IT! I had to quadruple the recipe to accommodate the group and good thing I did because everyone wanted more! THANKS!! ------------------------------------------------------------ *Butter lady cleary made and error in her recipe, mine did nothing of the sort, no butter pond on top..just 4 perfect cobblers. She should try it again and measure carefully instead of insulting others.

This recipe calls for so much butter that after baking it, there was SO MUCH grease floating on the top, I had to pour some off of the pan. It was also so liquidy on the inside so I tried to bake it longer, but it just got hard and browner on the top. I CANNOT believe 3 reviews for this were positive! Did these people like drinking butter? DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR INGREDIENTS!

I recently tried this recipe over the holidays for the 1st. time. It was part of my day care center's Thanksgiving Fest. I used canned peaches, which were already sweet and I was able to adjust the amount of sugar that the recipe called for so that it had less sugar. Needless, to say, the children and adults at my center loved it and it has now become a part of our seasonal menu. Cynthia Rodriguez

I tried this recipe last night. I had a couple beautiful and ripe peaches that were perfect for this recipe. It was so simple to put together. Everything you need is in the pantry. I did make one substitution and 1 change - I used splenda instead of sugar. I was wonderful. Also, I baked the cobbler in 4 medium souffle pans. Try this recipe. You will not be disappointed. I am already thinking up other fruits to use for next time.
