5 out of 5Pumpkin Roll - towel tipOctober 28, 2011
By DianeNorcross
Excellent recipe. I agree to increase the spices. Please remember to use a cotton dish towel that is not the 'nubby' kind. Mine is thin and has a 'woven' look to it and I keep it aside just for baking, and store it with my parchment paper and cheese cloth. Wrapped with foil, these freeze very well. Enjoy

I think last fall I made more than a dozen of these. This is one of the best desserts I've ever made. And there isn't a time I haven't gotten an absolute rave over this. It tastes a little better with real pumpkin, but don't worry if you don't have the real thing. For those of you new to this recipe, it is a real treat. I can't say enough good things about this recipe. This is one time I can say going off your diet is worth it.

I changed it up a little. I use self rising flour, its easier and i can leave out the baking powder & salt. I double the ginger. It brings out the flavor. Also lay out aluminum foil & sprinkle with powdered sugar. Makes for easy clean up. Let the bread only cool enough to touch it. about 3-5 min. cut edges off and lift out of pan. spread filling & Roll. It rolls much easier when the bread is warm. I sprinkle with lots of powdered sugar & wrap in wax paper. Taping the edges & put in refrigerator. That way everyone who comes gets to take one home easily... also to answer someones question it uses 100% pure pumpkin. not pumpkin pie mix. Hope this helps somebody....Enjoy

This recipe is a great recipe. I would make it again. To answer some of the questions out there about jelly roll pans. Jelly roll pans are nothing more than a cookie sheet with sides. I would suggest that you get a baking stone. Pampered Chef sells one that they call the rectangular baker I think. After it is well seasoned, nothing will ever stick to it and you don't have to use any grease. You won't need to line it with waxed paper either but ony after it is well seasoned.

Motowngirrl, pumpkin pie filling includes the spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. and sugar. Pumpkin is just pumpkin. This is fabulous and easy, great for parties.

I made one regular ( your version) and then one lower fat/lower sugar version. ( every little bit helps, right?) Both looked and tasted wonderfully delicious! I substituted: 3 eggs for 2 egg whites and 1 egg w/yoke in cake portion 1 cup sugar for 1 cup Splenda Sugar blend in cake portion 4 tbsp butter for 4 tbsp lowfat butter spread in icing 8 oz Cream Cheese for 8 oz 1/3 fat Cream Cheese in icing

I make this every year. My kids won't let me rest until I do. They love it with the cream cheese frosting, but I love it with vanilla bean ice cream, so I make a frosting one (or two or more) and I make one (or two or more) with vanilla bean ice cream for me and a couple of my friends. To use ice cream, just barely soften ice cream and spread it on roll (about 1/4 inch thick) and then roll up and freeze. Fabulous!

So I did welll ummmm there I was with a roll and a towel in the middle for the life of me could not figure out how to cut it with a towel in it..SOOOO glad this one said remove towel.. LMAO.. Okay ,Okay I was much youger so i was not so smart..lol... anyway can i use a cookie sheet or does it need to be a jelly roll pan and what is that? i guess i am still learning :) :) thank you tonya

By tlwatkins723
This is a awesome recipe! I have made them for Thanksgiving and Christmas for the past 3 years and everyone request them now! the only thing I do different than this recipe is instead of adding all the spices I just use pumpkin pie mix, it has all the spices and instead of using plan flower and adding the baking soda and stuff i use self rise flower and it all works the same..I like the more quick way of using things...lol.. but it is a great recipe!

My mother gave me this recipe many years ago and after having moved and down-sizing and all, it must have been in one of our garage sales. Thank you so much for having available at such a perfect time of the year! It's an awesome recipe. Laurie C
5 out of 5The ORIGINAL Pumpkin Roll!December 31, 2007
By ieatpuddin
As near as I can tell, this tastes exactly like the first Pumpkin Roll I ever ate! Before all the ""improvements"" and whatnot (I prefer mine WITHOUT nuts). Very easy. Made one as a ""test run"" for Thanksgiving. First one I ever made and people went crazy over it (and so did I)!!! I made five for Christmas and gave some as presents - one person thinks I should sell them!! LOL Personally, I have better luck using a silver-colored pan (as opposed to the darker ones) and generous amounts of grease instead of lining pans with parchment, aluminum foil or wax paper. Very easy and very tasty!!!

This is a great and very simple recipe...my only tip would be before you roll in into the towel, make sure you sprinkle LOTS of powdered sugar onto the towel...mine go stuck to in when I tried to roll it back up without the towel. Maybe I did something wrong, I'm not sure, but that's the only problem I had with it, and this was my first time making a pumpkin roll!!! =]

A friend of mine made pumpkin rolls about 10 years ago. After moving away I always thought about the pumpkin rolls every holiday season and wished I could have just one more slice. After looking through several recipes this one looked the closest to what I thought she made. You need to know that I don't cook much and never bake. It was so simple! I made one for Thanksgiving my family loved it, gave one to a friend his family loved it and took 1 to work. It was so good 6 people have asked for the recipe realizing that if I could make it anyone can.
5 out of 5A Really good easy recipeNovember 20, 2007
By ladykelien
My family loves this. It isn't hard to make you just have to remember that a jelly roll pan is often misnamed cookie sheet and that it will be a thin cake like batter you pour on the pan. Other than that there is nothing hard about this recipe. Do exactly what it says and it will turn out great every time.

I have made pumpkin roll a number of times in the past but not for a while. I lost my recipe and came to this site for the recipe. It looked the same so I made it. I realized as I was preparing this recipe that my previous recipe had a few improved steps. One is to only let the cake cool briefly so that it's still warm when turning it out. Second, be sure the towel is linen, not terry. It mustn't have a nap. I make it slightly damp as well. Next, add ground walnuts to the confectioners sugar, because this gives the finished cake a coating of sugar and nuts. Handle the cake with care and gently peel off waxed paper; you'll be glad you greased the pan well. I don't remember what side of the cake I left up in the past but decided to go with the papered side tonight. I also choose to roll the cake up right away, again while still somewhat warm. You may want to try these additions. If the nuts don't stick to the cake, try sprinkling them onto the cream cheese filling before rolling the cake up. It's not as pretty, but it tastes good.

Very delicious recipe, but not for the amateur baker- if you don't have a lot of experience baking you will most likely find this recipe a challenge!
