Sweet Potato Casserole
5 out of 5Great!!!!!January 03, 2012
By cathy0730
I made this dish for Christmas Eve dinner. I did double it and just doubled the cooking time. It was awesome! I can cook pretty good but I am not a big baker, I prefer to do my work on the stove top :) I also had no issues with the topping.. I made sure to follow the recipe exactly. This is a must try!

This receipe was a great hit at Thanksgiving. It received the stamp of approval from my 3 month old great niece who now has the name ""Sweet Potato"". This was also the dish I had to bring to the Christmas dinner. There was a different crowd and everyone loved it, at least that is the impression I got from the empy casserole dish! This casserole has now replaced my traditional yams.

I was asked to bring a Sweet Potato Casserole to a holiday pot luck dinner so I found this recipe and took it along. This was a big hit, people raved about it! I admit I made a couple of small additions (nuts and coconut to the topping) but I was surprised how well everyone seemed to enjoy it.
5 out of 5A family favoriteNovember 25, 2011

I just made this for Thanksgiving dinner. I made a few changes for our taste: 4 or so cups of baked sweet potato, 1/3 cup brown sugar and 1/3 cup of milk. The sweet potatoes were sweet enough by themselves so I cut way back on the sugar. After the eggs were added, the mixture didn't seem to need milk so I cut it back as well. My sister loved it and took some of the leftovers home with her. This is a keeper.

Every year my father makes sweet potato casserole. At my in-laws this year I attempted it using this recipe. I was dreading the results... But it turned out amazing! I doubled the recipe and got rave reviews!!!!

5 out of 5tweaked the toppingNovember 22, 2011
By bluenavena
Made a few changes in the topping. Kept the sugar at 1/2 cup, but reduced flour to 1/4 cup and reduced butter to 1/4 cup. Instead of melting the butter, I cut it into the sugar/flour mixture to make a crumble until the butter was the size of peas, then added pecans and tossed together. That eliminates the ""gluing"" effect and makes it very easy to sprinkle and spread over the potatoes.
5 out of 5MOST POPULAR DISHNovember 10, 2011
By barbwills
I started making this a couple of years ago and have to say - easy to make and the most popular dish I make! Well, other than the turkey. My grandson just loves this dish and wants me to make for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Can mix up the day before and cook that morning. Have to double recipe. Think it is the crumb topping on it that all enjoy. Only change I make is I add some cinnamon in the topping and sometimes leave out the nuts.

I made this for my graduation party and it was a huge hit!! I tripled the recipe and it was all gone! I had to paste the link on facebook because all of the requests for the recipe! Definitely better than any other sweet potato casserole I have tried, and I have tried A LOT!!
4 out of 5Agree about the sugar...January 23, 2011

Only saw the other review now, I'd agree about the sugar thing, quantity was too much, but aside from that this is delicious! A change from the norm as I live in Ireland :) Less sugar next time.

I would advise tasting sweet potatoes before adding sugar. My sweet potatoes were naturally very sweet, so I did cut the sugar to 1/2 cup and possibly could have gone down as far as 1/4 cup. The topping also adds sweetness and crunch. Very good!

Recipe about as simple as could be. Turned out wonderfully smooth, sweet and fragrant. Embellished with a generous dash of nutmeg prior to mixing. Gave off a warm smell while baking to heat. If any leftovers (doubtful) I am going to put individual spoonfuls in cupcake tins and re-heat for finger food or appetizer. Dave G. - Houston, Tx.

I made this for Thanksgiving but first made it for my office lunch, they were the testers. Everyone loved it at both events. For someone who is not a big ""cooker"" I was very proud of myself!
5 out of 5delicious, but cut the sugarDecember 09, 2010
By liekwhoa
I made this at Thanksgiving and again last week (and I might have to make it again once it runs out!) I second someone's recommendation about cutting the sugar in the sweet potatoes -- the first batch was too sweet with the full amount, and in the second batch I used about 1/2 the sugar and it came out fine. I also added some vegan marshmallows on top. Someone mentioned that the topping is gloppy if you make it as described -- yes, before it's cooked, but it spreads out and gets nice and crusty while it bakes. Just dot the topping evenly on the potatoes before you put it in the oven and it'll be fine.

This was a big hit at our Thanksgiving dinner this year. My father in law loves sweet potato's any which way so I try to do them different every year. The only thing that I cut back on was the butter, but left everything else the same in the casserole. For the topping, I didn't use all of it, just enought to lightly cover the sweet potato's. Will definately make it again.
3 out of 5Too SweetNovember 26, 2010

I cut back on the sugar 25% on a double recipe and it was still too sweet. If you don't desire candied sweet potatoes I recommend cutting back at least 50%. Otherwise the dish was good.

I love this recipe!! I have used it for several years but one Thanksgiving I was out of pecans and tried walnuts instead and it was fantastic!! So if you like walnuts... try the substitution... I don't think you'll be disappointed!!! :-) Happy Turkey Day 2010!!
1 out of 5Poor wordingNovember 24, 2010

The topping is messed up. It says to combine the ingredients, but you should instead sprinkle the dry ingredients first before drizzling the butter. The topping glopped in one spot, instead of spreading evenly.

I make this every year for Thanksgiving per family requests..Just recently made it for my job's potluck...Everyone loved it...The only thing I did different was add some honey and added more brown sugar...YUMMY!!!
5 out of 5A Thanksgiving tradition!November 20, 2010
By gina0922
I have been making this casserole for years and is my all time ""go to recipe"" for any holiday potluck. I did tweak it a bit to suit my families taste though. I only used 1/2 cup of brown sugar as the sweet potatoes are sweet enough on their own and added 1 tsp of cinnamon. In the topping, I added 1/2 cup of unsweetened flaked/shredded coconut. I also used cold unsalted butter. I cut the butter, flour and sugar with a pastry cutter. Then added the chopped pecans and coconut. This way was great because the topping was more like a crumble and I could just sprinkle it on top.

You won't find a better Thanksgiving sidedish anywhere! I found that if I don't put any sugar in the potatoes it tastes perfect. I only use sugar in the topping. This recipe is a HIT!

Seriously, I've never made sweet potato casserole before, but I've always known the marshmallow topped stuff wasn't for me. Someone told me that their aunt made some with a crunchy nut topping, I came and found this recipe and served it up to some friends at a belated holiday dinner last night and WOW! I'm not even kidding that everyone had wide eyes and they were all expressing surprised love for this casserole. On every plate, there was ""save the best for last"" going on and leftover requests were plentiful. THANKS!

This is a restaurant quality casserole. The entire family loved it. Would highly recommend. Instead of using melted butter in the topping, I used room temperature butter which helped with the spreadability.

I've made this casserole a few times and it is always a huge hit. Try adding some fresh ground pepper and a little nutmeg to the potatoes when mashing. This adds a little more flavor and compliments the sweetness of the brown sugar. Enjoy!

I made this casserole last year for Thanksgiving and my family loved it! They requested I bring it this year for the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. The only thing I did differently was I poured a little melted butter on the topping after it baked, it was delicious! Enjoy!

By cookingsorocks
I'm a single, 32-year-old man with a love for cooking good food that's reasonably health and tastes amazing. This recipe fits the bill. I love sweet potatoes and nuts, so this was a perfect combination of my two most favorite foods. It was so yummy as a side I couldn't help making it twice this month. It does take a little while to put together and make, but the final product is definitely worth it. Thanks!!

I loved this! It was a huge hit at Thanksgiving with my family. We are a small family of 4 and this was enough for me my fiance my 13 year old son and the baby. I made one little extra step and added marshmallows on top and baked an extra 7-8 min. It was such a hit I am making it again for Christmas.

This recipe was very easy and simple to follow. I doubled the recipe for the amount of people I was serving over Thanksgiving. The flavor was very tasty. The only problems I ran into, was the topping. It was very sticky and not very ""sprinkle-able"". As I doubled the topped I used less butter and brown sugar and more pecans to make it sprinkle better, which it did and it tasted wonderful. I had to cook the casserole longer than stated for it to set up. It did not burn or overcook. I'll use this recipe again.

This sweet potato casserole is great; I did cut back on the brown sugar to 1/2 cup and the butter to 1/4 cup in the main dish. Left the topping just as it was. My family was very impressed.

Was looking for something different to serve at Easter. WOW!!! Everyone really liked this tasty dish. Will cut back on the sugar next time around. Hint on mashing the sweet potatoes: I baked them in the microwave to avoid the chore of boiling and then peeling. Worked out very well. In minutes the sweet potatoes were baked and all I needed to do was scoop out the delicious insides and throw the skins away!! The family is looking forward to having this dish again and again!! Great addition to the menu.

I made this dish for Christmas dinner. I chose not to chop the nuts which I thought made it visually interesting. We had mushroom soup, ham with red skin mashed potatoes, green beans, and pumpkin pie. I was planning to use marshmallows and when I found this recipe I thought the nuts whe add some texture to the meal. Turned out to be a very good decision. It will become a family tradition.

I loved this recipe. My only suggestion for next time would be to cut the sugar back to about 1/2 cup rather than 1 cup in the casserole itself. It was extremely sweet! It tasted more like a dessert.

I made this for Thanksgiving, oh my gosh was this great. I was deciding between 2 new recipes and am I ever so glad I picked this one. Real easy to prepare, next time I will use chopped nuts vs cracking them. I am happy my son wouldn't try it, more for me!!!!! Would make this again in a heartbeat.
5 out of 5Perfect foundation recipe for creating your own...November 27, 2008
By Gethenian
This is a delicious cassarole prepared as-is, but it really shines when you tweak it to your tastes. It's an ideal simple, basic foundation that can be built upon to suit anyone's preferances. For example: I suggest adding your favourite pumpkin pie spice blend (nutmeg, cinnamon, ground cloves, and ginger are all wonderful). Additionally, you can try changing the topping -- rather than the one the recipe provides, I just spread little marshmallows over the top of the cassarole and cook it for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the marshmallows are brown on top. Sprinkling on dried orange peel or crystalized ginger or even candied flower petals makes for a fabulous colorful and tasty touch. You could also add chocolate or caramel on top. It's as versatile as your imagination. Definitely worth keeping and experimenting with for years to come!! Note: The recipe doesn't seem to include instructions for mashing the sweet potatoes. The internet has numerous variations, but I found that the best way was to peel your three potatoes, cut them into 1-inch cubes, and steam for 15-20 minutes. I found that once they're done, you can put them in a bowl and mash them and then if you add the sugar and milk, it cools everything off enough to add the egg without worrying about cooking it, so there's virtually no wait time for cooling the potatoes.

I just made this for Thanksgiving for my family. Everyone loved it!!!! It was a big hit. My Uncle who doesn't like sweet potatoes tried it and said I out did myself!!! Some people thought it was too sweet and it was more like a dessert, so next time I make it I will cut down on the brown sugar a bit, but other than that it was excellent !!!

Although I have yet to try this recipe myself, I have immensely enjoyed this classic recipe since childhood. As a sweet potatoe casserole afficiando, allow me to make the following suggestion: DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THE ORIGINAL RECIPE!! Do not cut the sugar, and by all means DO NOT USE CANNED POTATOES. To do so is culinary blasphemy! If you are concerned about people with problems regulating sugar, here is a hint; they do not need to eat it!

This recipe is AMAZING and has become a staple at holiday meals. You can try and lower the fat & calories a little by using reduced-fat milk, but other than that, don't skimp out! This is a sinful side dish that you should just indulge in.

This casserole has been a favorite with my family & friends for quite some time. Even those who don't like sweet potatoes are in love with this dish. I get requests to make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year, I was asked to make it for a family function in May! Because we have a large family, I have to always make 2 for each holiday - or someone will get left out! My plan this Christmas is to make 2 or 3 to give as gifts.

I have made this for years. It is always the best sweet potato dish ever. On Thanksgiving, I sometimes put miniature marshmallows on top and put it briefly under the broiler. I even have made it parve for kosher meat meals buy using rice milk or soy milk and a healthy butter substitute like Earth Balance Buttery instead of dairy.

I asked my son-in-law to bring home some sweet potatoes and meant to say Yams. Of course he brought home sweet potatoes. My thought was to just cook them. Oh, how dry. I googled ""sweet potatoes"" and selected this recipe. We were having 13 guest for dinner. So I made this in a 9x13 oblong greased glass dish thinking there will be left overs. Not so. It was the hit of the dinner. I made it again and this recipe is making it's round in my circle. I baked the potatoes in the oven & let them cool. It's the 3rd listing on google.

I can only say positive things about this sweet potato casserole. The recipe is almost identical to one that my sister-in-law gave me many years ago, that I had lost. I have made this recipe so many time now that it has become my ""signature"" dish. Every time my husband and I get invited to any type of bring a dish to pass, I don't even get to choose. I am told ""Please bring your sweet potato casserole recipe. I have taken a little of the fat content out, by using ""egg beaters"" in place of eggs. In the topping I use some ""Splenda brown sugar"" along with the regular brown sugar, for my friends who have issues with elevated sugar levels. Keep up the good work!!!!!!! I will make this recipe over and over again.

The crunchy topping and fluffy casserole are delicious. This is a very pretty side dish for fall and winter holidays. I have adjusted the sugar by reducing it by half. Also, you can use egg whites instead of whole eggs. Even with a little tweaking this recipe is yummy every time. Everyone who tastes it wants the recipe. You can also use canned yams if you are in a rush (definitely reduce the sugar when using canned Yams)

This recipe is easy to make AND it is mouth-watering delicious! Hands down it is the talk of the table when served. By Babs0828
EVERYONE at our Thanksgiving table raved about this dish! I had to share the recipe with 3 other ladies (even though I didn't really want to, as I wanted it to be my own special dish-especially since everyone loved it so much)! It was simple to make. I used canned yams that I drained well and then mashed. I didn't chop up the pecans too finely, and used a few more (about 1/4 cup more) than the recipe called for. My son is in college and asked that I make this again when he comes home for Christmas.
3 out of 5Needs more cooking time than stated.November 22, 2007
By aya23
The timing is off on the recipe, it says to cook it for 30-40 minutes at 350, but it was nowhere near to done at 45 minutes. I was in a hurry and I cranked up the temp to 425 and it still took about 15-20 more minutes. I doubled the recipe and put it in a 13x9in pan, but it was not so much deeper than what you see in the photo for this recipe. It wouldn't make the cooking time THAT much off. The recipe tasted very good, and everyone loved the thick topping. I thought the potato mixture was too thin, and next time I will try this adjusting the butter to be less, and the milk less as well.

Hi. I just want to say that this is the best sweet potato casserole I've ever tasted. I have made this dish several times in the past year (about 5 times to be exact), and I am getting ready to make it again! People have requested this dish whenever there is a church function going on, and for a holiday dish. I'm not a big sweet potato fan, but this is one delicious dish! It is not too rich as some sweet potato casseroles are, it's just right. Thanks for posting this recipe.
