I am a cake baker but I had a taste for collard greens cornbread and sweet potato pie after hearing Fantashia sing that on American Idol this past Wednesday, so I googled southern sweet potato pie and this recipe was the first to pop up. A tip to assist on sweetness, I followed the recipe with the exception of using 3 cups of sweet potatoes, instead of two, fresh boiled of course and a pinch of salt. This filled 2 deep dish pie crust. Simply yummy!!!

I, like the other user, halved the sugar with half white, half brown sugar and added pumpkin pie spice. I think ill use only 3/4 white sugar and 3/4 white sugar, and only 2 oz of butter when I make this again. I made 2 pies as test pies to make sure I liked this recipe. (My first recipe used buttermilk and I just did not like the taste.) Wal-Mart ran out of regular pie crusts so I had to buy deep dish crusts so the crust was more than the filling. (But thats okay with us!) Overall, GREAT recipe! Will make again tomorrow and again on Friday for Christmas!

The best recipe I have found that makes a great pie that holds together when sliced. The only thing I did different is I used half brown sugar, half-white sugar and prebaked my crust for a few minutes. Oh yeah, I also used pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon, just simplify delicious… all smiles this way (:

I tried the recipe, I doubled the ingredients to make 4 pies. My husband tried the pie while it was cooling, he was praising me for a job well done, it was delicious. Everyone (my daughter, niece, sister, nephew and mother) was eating this delicious pie before going to bed. ""I definitely will be using this recipe again.""

This is a great recipe for a great pie, why would anyone want Pumpkin Pie when Sweet Potato Pie is available? My family likes it with half brown sugar half white sugar, and the crust a little extra brown!..and of course served warm with whipped cream!

This is one of the best-tasting sweet potatoe pies I've made. What a nice twist instead of the traditional nutmeg-infused sweet potatoe pie. The flavor had a WOW effect on my guests. I didn't change any of the ingredients. Stick to the recipe to get a wonderful-tasting holiday pie.

I followed the recipe almost to the T. The only thing that I changed was instead of can milk I used heavy cream (same measurement). The only thing that I would change is the amount of sugar. Instead of 2 Cups I would use 1 1/2. It was just too sweet for me. The kids loved it of course.

One word, YUM! I also followed the advice to use 1 1/2 cups of sugar with 1/2 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of nutmeg. Instead of using evaporated milk, I used sweetened condensed milk. Perfection! 4-stars...

This was my first ever sweet potato pie (not a common pie in Europe), and I loved it. I reduced the sugar by two fifths, because American recipes are always too sweet for me. Will reduce by half next time - it's still just a tad too sweet. And I was feeling adventurous, so I added 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, as someone suggested, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, as someone else said, and then I also added 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger and 1/4 teaspoon cardamom. Must say the end result exceeded all expectation. This printout is going into my recipes folder with a gold star in the margin. Delicious.

This is delicious--I changed the recipe a bit adding one half cup of brown sugar and one half cup of white sugar..I also used some nutmeg about one half teaspoon.. This made only one pie for me, maybe my pie dish is deeper than most...Easy, quick and delicious...thanks for this recipe

I highly recommend this recipe. This was my first time making sweet potato pie. I tweaked the recipe by adding 1/2 tsp nutmeg and reducing the sugar to 1 1/2 cups instead of 2 cups. The pies came out superb and was a winner at Thanksgiving dinner.

This is a great & easy recipe A+++. All my friends want me to make them a pie. Instead of 2 c. of sugar I use 1 3/4. c. I use REAL butter/not margarine. One other thing I do is instead of 8 in' pie shell--I use mini tart shells. Always a hit at any party or gathering. Top off with whip cream or cool whip. Yummmy!

I made this pie on Saturday as a test run for Thanksgiving dinner and loved the simplicity of it... Instead of cutting back on the sugar I added 1/2 teaspoon of salt, remembering what my grandmother taught me... I also followed the advice of someone else and added a teaspoon of nutmeg... The additions to the original recipe met my grandmother's standards..She stated it was the best she has ever tasted!!

I made this for a NC Style BBQ and it was a hit! I followed the recipe with just a few alterations. I roasted the sweet potatoes and then pureed them in a food processor to get rid of any strings. I also upped the cinnamon to 2 tsp and add 1/4 tsp all spice. It was a little sweet -- I think you could easily cut the sugar back a 1/4 cup -- but everyone loved it.

I have never made a pie in my life nor have I ever eaten a Sweet Potato Pie. This pie was easy to make, delicious, and all of my neighbors & friends are pounding on my door for more! =) I did cheat & used Marie Calanders pie crust which is wonderful by the way but I did peel & boil fresh sweet potato's. Made with lots of love. I would recommend using a bit less sugar, maybe 1 1/2 cups vs 2 cups because it is a tad too sweet with 2 cups. I thought it was just me tasting the overpowering sweet but my friends also said to use less sugar next time. I am baking 4 more pies right now! =) ~~ Enjoy ~~

This Thanksgiving was very special for my family and we always celebrate it with good food. I especially wanted to have a Sweet Potatoe Pie because I knew Obama would be eating Sweet Potatoe Pie too. So I searched the internet for a recipe similar to my grandmother's recipe. Well, I found this one and boy was this pie good, Obama good. Try this recipe and add a little nutmeg and it sure to be the talk of the party. I plan to make more and give them all to my neighbors for Christmas.

This recipe is comparable to Ebony Cookbook recipe published in 1962, that my mom gave me. The only thing I do is use a little allspice in addition to the cinnamon. It gives it that total rounded spice taste. I do not know if pumpkin spice is the same, but the difference with and w/out allspice is the allspice enhances the sweet potato flavor more.
5 out of 5Southern comfort.... foodMay 14, 2008

I met a girl in the military named Jerrica. She made so many different recipes from home that I had never tried before being a northwest native. Sweet potato pie is something I've been craving for about a year now but all the other recipes I found were complicated and didnt' have an ingredient that in my head was key, evaporated milk! So once I found this I cheated here and there with canned potatos, and marie calanders (SP) pie crust. It was so fast and a huge hit. NOTHING LIKE PUMPKIN PIE so my family loves it. I hope to spark interest in southern food in more of my northwest native friends with dishes just like this! Absolutely will save and make again!

I had a taste for sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving but I never made one before, so I decided to go online for a recipe, and this one stuck out at me. I decided to try it and it was some of the best sweet potato pie I ever tasted. I made some for Christmas and took it down to grandma's and she loved it! Thanks so much for sharing this great recipe!

I have had such good luck with this sweet potato pie. My husband adores it! I have served this pie to company and received rave reviews! Its simple and easy, it is fool-proof! I have also frozen the cooked pies, eventually thawing them out and reheating them in the oven aqnd they were as delicious as fresh baked. Try this recipe you will be a fan also!

Mom always did the baking for the holidays. Thanksgiving was our biggest family get together. Soon over time mom couldn't handle all the work and my sister and I resorted to buying the pies. This year I decided to look up the recipe and try it myself. This recipe looked easy, plus it contained all the ingredients mom could remember she put into her pies. I cooked the first two pies and my family ate one before we left home. The pies were delicious. Christmas I baked for every one!

I don't bake (hardly ever) but I wanted to bake a Sweet Potato Pie for Thanksgiving and trolled the Internet and saw this recipe . It looked simple and straightforward, I read the reviews and decided to try it. I followed the recipe exactly (something I usually don't do when I cook). I took the pies to 2 different parties and people really liked them. I just made 2 more and gave them to friends - they really liked them too. I really like the pie too. I am going to make more for the Christmas Holidays. An excellent Sweet Potato Pie.

I made a couple of small changes to the recipe. I substituted 1/2 cup light brown sugar for 1/2 cup of the white sugar. I also separated the egg whites, beat them to medium peaks and folded the whites in as the last ingredient, and used pumpkin pie spice rather than just plain cinnamon. I chose to partially pre bake the crust before adding the filling. This is the first sweet potato pie I've ever made(maybe the first pie ever) and it turned out to be the best pie I've ever tasted. I'm definitely keeping this recipe.

I lost my original recipe that we have used for a few years. I had my son go online and pull up ""sweet potato pie"" and this was the first one that popped up. I can tell you now, I won't loose this recipe. It's by far the best sweet potato pie I have ever tasted.

I made this pie for some coworkers last Christmas and they loved it. They've asked me to make it again this year and one asked for the recipe to make for their family for Thanksgiving. I couldn't believe how easy it was to make and the best part was that it only took about 30 minutes to put it together.
